SUMMARY:Live Owls for Downtown Ashland's Harry Potter Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:“Owls are magical creatures most often used for delivering post and parcels in the wizarding world. They are known for their speed and discretion and can find recipients without an address.” – J.K. Rowling \nWildlife Images will bring real live owls to Northwest Nature Shop for downtown Ashland’s Harry Potter birthday celebration Friday July 31st 4-6 pm.  Owls are a widely used creature in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels.  For Muggles these feathered creatures can be mysterious and spooky\, but in the wizarding world they’re magical\, often friendly\, and useful. \nWildlife Images Rehabilitation and Education Center located in Merlin\, Oregon provides for the care and treatment of sick\, injured and orphaned wildlife.  Thousands of children visit the center each year on educational field trips\, enhancing their knowledge of nature and wildlife preservation.  For Harry Potter’s birthday celebration\, they will bring their owls to the Northwest Nature Shop so children and adults can see live owls up-close and learn all about them.  The owls will be outside with space for social distancing.  \nWe ask everyone who joins us to wear a mask and follow social distancing rules. \n

SUMMARY:Rogue River Watershed Council presents : Ashland Dam Removal
DESCRIPTION:The Rogue River Watershed Council is implementing a fish passage improvement project on Ashland Creek at the Smith-Myer-Roper Division Dam\, located in Ashland Creek Park.  The project aims to remove the dame to improve juvenile fish passage for Coho Salmon and steelhead as well as improve the irrigation system so that water users can still divert their full water rights.  Ashland creek provides essential cold water habitat for Rogue Basin salmon and this project will improve access to 2 miles of additional habitat. Project manager Alexis Larsen will discuss the project as well as other restoration work that RRWC is doing in the Rogue Basin. \n \n

SUMMARY:Finding Butterflies and Other Wildness
DESCRIPTION:Sure to be a visual and intellectual delight! Local author David Lee Myers’ new book “Wings in the Light: Wild Butterflies in North America\,” encourages us to engage nature in our own yards\, countrysides\, and wildish public lands. Photographs feature butterflies and habitats across North America\, emphasizing those near his home territory. \nMyers will show slides from his book\, especially butterflies of the Rogue-Siskiyou area and the majestic Monarchs. He’ll read from “Wings in the Light” about going out and looking around—how and where to find butterflies and other wildness—and on the rewards for doing so. \nDavid Lee Myers was raised by a scientist father and artist mother. Settling in the Pacific Northwest\, he combined his heritages into natural history photography. Teaching college\, helping students find their own voices expressing the joys\, challenges\, and sorrows of life was a great satisfaction.

SUMMARY:New Hikes of Central and Southern Oregon\, with William Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Author\, historian\, backcountry adventurer William Sullivan has just done a complete update the hiking guide book for Central Oregon – huge changes because of fires and an upcoming permit system. He is also doing new printing of “100 Hikes in Southern Oregon” next month that includes the Jack-Ash Trail and updated information related to recent fire effects. Come hear from Oregon’s history and hiking guru on his yearly visit to the Northwest Nature Shop! \nThe author of three novels and a dozen nonfiction books\, Sullivan grew up in Salem\, Oregon. He completed his B.A. degree in English at Cornell University under Alison Lurie\, studied linguistics at Germany’s Heidelberg University\, and earned an M.A. in German at the University of Oregon. He reads in a dozen languages\, plays the pipe organ\, and enjoys backcountry ski expeditions. \nSullivan is known in the American West as the author who backpacked more than a thousand miles across Oregon’s wilderness in 1985. His journal of that adventure\, “Listening for Coyote\,” has since been chosen one of Oregon’s “100 Books\,” the most significant books in state history.\nIn summer he writes at the log cabin that he and his wife Janell Sorensen built by hand in the wilds of Oregon’s Coast Range\, more than a mile from roads\, electricity\, and telephones. The rest of the year they live in Eugene\, Oregon\, where he volunteers to promote libraries and literature.
