SUMMARY:Intro to Identifying Animal Tracks Presentation by Nolan Richard- Thursday February 8th\, 7pm - 8:30pm
DESCRIPTION:A February Cross Country Ski trip is a pleasant experience\, BUT – have you ever been bummed out that there’s not more life to observe?? There’s almost no insects or birds to look at\, and all the plants are covered up! However\, maybe you’ve noticed all those tracks and trails in the snow??? Who’s making those?! \nJoin Naturalist and Highschool Biology Teacher Nolan Richard at the Northwest Nature Shop for an engaging slideshow on Wildlife Tracking. This is an introductory class where we’ll cover the basics of how to identify different animal tracks\, how to interpret the movement of the animal\, and briefly cover wildlife sign (ex. Scat\, feeding\, scent marking\, etc). We’ll also give you advice on how to get started! \nYou’ll walk away from this class knowing how to identify some of the most common animal tracks in our region\, and with the knowledge of how to get started tracking on your own! \nNolan Richard spent a year studying Wildlife Tracking at Alderleaf Wilderness College in Washington State\, and is certified by Cyber Tracker International\, holding a Level 3 Track and Sign Certificate.

SUMMARY:Introductory Fall LICHEN Hike!
DESCRIPTION:Hi there local Naturalists! \nI\, Nolan Richard\, am thrilled to lead a Lichen Hike from 10am-3pm on Saturday October 21st to Pilot Rock! \nThis hike will serve as an introductory field lichen class focusing on lichen anatomy\, biology\, ecology\, and of course…  identification. I chose Pilot Rock for the diversity of habitats (young and old conifer forest\, oak woodland\, meadow\, and rocky habitats)\, which will give us a great lichen diversity. \nThe hike itself will be slow paced\, relatively short (3-3.5 miles) with up to 450 ft of elevation gain. We will do some exploring of the PCT\, the trail to Pilot Rock\, and “Pilot” meadow (The large meadow below Pilot Rock). We will meet at the Northwest Nature Shop at 9:50am. \nPlease bring… \n\nWarm clothes and good shoes (there is a good chance of cold and rain this time of year) – I’ll update you with weather as the date approaches. We will reschedule if the weather is bad or if there’s too much fresh snow covering the ground.\nLunch and water.\nA loupe/magnifying glass for looking at small lichen features. Important!! (Available at the Nature Shop)\n(Optional). A copy of  “Macrolichens of the Pacific Northwest” by Bruce McCune if you have one. (A couple copies available at the Nature Shop).\n\nPlease RSVP by emailing nolrich829@gmail.com (Limited to 12 participants). Class costs $20/person. \n \nCheers\, Nolan \n\n\nExpect to learn… \n1.  The basics of how lichens work and what they are composed of. \n2. How to go about identifying them. (Using terminology\, categorizing) \n3. The characteristics of the common lichen genera (8+ genera) along the trails\, and a couple less common genera.

SUMMARY:October 2023 Annular Eclipse!
DESCRIPTION:  \nRing of Fire \nOn Saturday\, Oct. 14\, 2023\, there will be an annular solar eclipse almost fully visible from right here in Ashland! During an annular solar eclipse\, the apparent size of the Moon’s disk is slightly smaller than the apparent size of the Sun’s disk. Therefore\, only the outer edge of the Sun remains visible and the Sun appears as a brilliant ring if you are inside the path of annular solar eclipse. This is an otherworldly sight often called a “ring of fire”. \nThe path arches from Oregon to Texas; then it will continue south through Central America to Brazil.  If you’re on the path of annularity you’ll see the full annular eclipse and the closer you are to the center of that path\, the longer theb annularity (the maximum point of the eclipse) will last.  The whole event will take about three hours\, but annularity will only last about five minutes. The eclipse will begin in Oregon at 9:13 a.m. PDT and end in Texas at 12:03 p.m. CDT. \nBe Prepared! \nYou will need eclipse glasses to safely view the Sun. You can get them by clicking right here!  We also highly recommend that you gather up colanders\, slotted spoons\, or anything else with small holes (you can poke holes in a piece of cardboard)\, because the eclipse will make very cool shadows! \nAnd that’s not all… \nThis eclipse will be a warm-up act for the spectacle of the total solar eclipse crossing the United States just 177 days later on Monday\, April 8\, 2024.  A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth\, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.  The total solar eclipse will cross North America\, passing over Mexico\, the United States\, and Canada. Except during the brief total phase of the eclipse\, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face\, you’ll need solar glasses to safely view this one too!

SUMMARY:BIRDING HARNEY COUNTY Presentation by Harry Fuller
DESCRIPTION:A world–class birder’s paradise\, Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is located in remote and beautiful southeastern Oregon. While Malheur is the main draw in the area\, there are many birding hotspots nearby including Steens Mountain and the lush floodplain around the city of Burns.  Harry Fuller\, birding guide and author has written a book to help find new places to bird in southeastern Oregon. \nFuller will present this book on Thursday September 21st at 7 pm here at Northwest Nature Shop.  Come early to get a seat. Harry’s presentations are always entertaining and informative. Fuller’s book\, Birding Harney County\, will help you find the birds you are looking for by identifying where and when the birds are present. Harney County has many birds not found where most birders live. From Bobolink to Common Nighthawk. From Ferruginous Hawk to Franklin’s Gull. From White Pelican to Wilson’s Phalarope this area is a birder’s challenge\, and this book will bring some birder’s rewards. \nJoin Fuller as he presents where to bird at Malheur field station and the lesser known birding hotspots in Harney County.

SUMMARY:The Great Gray Owl in Jackson County
DESCRIPTION:Harry Fuller\, author\, birding guide and former resident of Ashland\, will discuss the habits and habitat of the elusive great Gray Owl. Jackson County is a hotspot for this species. This county may have more resident Great Gray Owls than all of California\, where it is endangered. Thankfully\, the birds are breeding this year as was not the case last year due to drought. Fuller will share some of the beautiful images captured by a small coterie of Great Gray Owl lovers who live in or near Ashland. \nHarry Fuller is co-author of The Great Gray Owls of California\, Oregon and Washington. He is a birding guide and former president of the Klamath Bird Observatory’s Board of Directors. He was co-founder of the Ashland Christmas Bird Count\, now over a decade old and going strong. \nPresentation is free at 7 pm at Northwest Nature Shop\, 154 Oak St.\, Ashland on Tuesday June 13th.

SUMMARY:Booksigning First Friday December 2nd
DESCRIPTION:Filled with mystery conjured by unparalleled biodiversity\, the Klamath Mountains tell numerous\nstories of evolution and resilience shaped over long periods of time. Geology is the defining\ncharacter of this range\, with numerous smaller ranges—including the Siskiyou\, Marble\, and\nTrinity mountains—forming a jigsaw puzzle of big-shouldered river canyons and sharp ridgelines.\nWithin the Klamath Knot\, geology also shapes climate with wet coastal rainforests in the west\nand dry semi-deserts in the east. \nMichael Kauffmann and Justin Garwood co-edited a new work titled The Klamath Mountains: A\nNatural History with the help of 32 other authors. Experts in all aspects of the region’s natural\nhistory came together and are the first to tell the entire story. \n  \nMichael and Justin will be discussing and signing books on December 2nd at the Northwest\nNature Shop from 6 to 8 pm and on December 3rd will be presenting at Southern Oregon University from 7-9pm.\nThese events are co-sponsored by the Northwest Nature Shop\, Rogue Valley Audubon Society\,\nand KS Wild.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Richard Crossley
DESCRIPTION:Richard Crossley’s field guides have been Northwest Nature Shop favorites for years.  Richard Crossley is an internationally acclaimed birder\, photographer and award-winning author of ‘The Crossley ID Guide’ series. Born in Yorkshire\, he also lived in Japan\, and birded worldwide before settling down in the USA. \nRichard will talk about birding lessons learned from living on 3 continents to paying back through conservation initiatives and youth birding. It will be a fast-paced story told in a Yorkshire brogue\, through a camera lens that loves color and art\, but with a strong point of view.\nCrazy\, wildly passionate\, driven and single-minded are just a few of the words used to describe his love of birding and the outdoors. He quickly became obsessed with the newfound opportunities provided by digital technology\, Photoshop and book design. The Crossley ID Guide series was created. The innovative design shows a more lifelike and complete picture\, challenging many of the traditional ‘old-school’ book layouts. With humor and depth Richard will highlight the thoughts behind the revolutionary ‘The Crossley ID Guide’ series to self-publishing his latest guide on Western Birds – some of it will surprise you! \n Come and listen to Richard’s optimistic outlook for birding\, lifestyles and conservation. It’s sure to change the way you think! \nFree admission\, no assigned seating. 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. \nThis presentation is at Bellview Grange\, 1050 Tolman Creek Rd\, Ashland\, OR 97520

SUMMARY:Guided Fall Mushroom Walk #4
DESCRIPTION:Join our local mushroom expert Mike Potts for a slow-paced\, off-trail walk through the woods and learn your way around the world of wild fungi. The emphasis will be on finding fungi and learning about identification and the diversity of mushroom species and how to sustainably harvest wild mushrooms. Edible and poisonous varieties will be discussed. Meet at the Northwest Nature Shop\, 154 Oak St.\, Ashland at 10:00 am where we’ll gather as a group and then drive to the foraging location (approximately 45 – 60 minutes from Ashland.) Return to Ashland by 4:00 pm. \nBe prepared for adverse weather. Wear appropriate hiking shoes (We will be doing some off-trail walking on uneven terrain)\, bring a water bottle\, a lunch\, rain gear\, a collecting basket\, a foldable knife\, a mushroom ID book if you have one\, and a whistle. Cost is $55 per person per hike.  6 dates offered:  Saturday September 24\, Sunday September 25\, October 2nd\, October 15\, October 16 and October 22nd.   The location of each hike will be disclosed at a later date to give us flexibility in planning around weather and mushroom abundance. Space is limited so sign up early.  Payment at the time of registration is required. Call 541-482-3241 to sign up or email northwestnatureshop@gmail.com \n  \nHOW TO PREPARE: \n\nDress appropriately for the weather. The key to having an enjoyable experience is to be prepared for the possibly cold and wet weather.  We will be in the forests of the southern Oregon Cascade range @ 4500 ft so expect considerably colder temps at that elevation.  We won’t be moving that fast so you might get colder than you do on normal hikes! We recommend dressing in layers and bringing waterproof outer layers. We will walk rain or shine.\n\n\nWear sturdy shoes. It is important to wear appropriate shoes/boots for being in the forest. Expect uneven terrain through the forest and be prepared to traverse through undergrowth\, over fallen branches\, and logs at times.\nThere are no bathrooms or outhouses at trail heads we leave from. Please plan accordingly.\nBring a lunch\, water\, knife\, safety whistle\, and basket or bag for collecting.\nPlease\, No Dogs.  We love them but for mushroom walks\, we have to ask you to leave them home.\n\n\nBring a positive attitude and an open mind to learn about the world of fungi around you.
