SUMMARY:Birding Without Borders: An Epic World Big Year
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nIn 2015\, bird nerd Noah Strycker of Oregon became the first human to see more than half of the planet’s bird species in a single\, year-long\, round-the-world birding trip. Anything could have happened\, and a lot did. He was scourged by blood-sucking leeches\, suffered fevers and sleep deprivation\, survived airline snafus and car breakdowns and mudslides and torrential floods\, skirted war zones\, and had the time of his life. Birding on seven continents and carrying only a pack on his back\, Strycker enlisted the enthusiastic support of local birders to tick more than 6\,000 species\, including Adelie Penguins in Antarctica\, a Harpy Eagle in Brazil\, a Spoon-billed Sandpiper in Thailand\, and a Green-breasted Pitta in Uganda. He shared the adventure in real time on his daily blog (audubon.org/noah)\, and now he reveals the inside story. We will arrange objects onto the 4″x4″ Sunprint paper indoors.  We will then take it outside & lay it out to expose the paper.  The areas of the paper exposed to the sun will fade from blue to white (2-5 minutes).   We will then rinse the paper in water & whatever was not exposed will washout & be white.  A piece of art is created.  For ages 5+

DESCRIPTION:Create your first nature journal! Many important scientists\, naturalists\, and philosophers such as Charles Darwin\, Henry David Thoreau\, Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Aldo Leopold\, Rachel Carson\, and John Muir were all known for keeping journals of their observations\, poems\, and discoveries. On Sunday June 4th\, at 2 pm we’ll meet at the Northwest Nature Shop and then walk over to Lithia Park to observe the natural world around us and then record what we hear\, smell\, see\, and feel. Nature journaling teaches children to become keen observers of the natural world by drawing and writing about plants and animals in the field.  Keeping a nature journal develops the most important science process skills; observation and documentation. DESCRIPTION:Morel Mushroom season approaching!  Get ready.  Join Northwest Nature Shop and  local mushroom expert Nils Nelson on a guided mushroom foray. The emphasis will be on finding fungi and learning something about identification and the diversity of mushroom species. Edible and poisonous varieties will be discussed.  Typically\, mushrooms abound at this time of year.  Nelson is a graduate of Evergreen State College with a focus in mycology. Learn the best practices for successful milkweed germination\, what plants to use for nectar\, basic design for butterflies and how you can become a certified Monarch Waystation. \nAs owner and principal designer for Rockbird Gardens\, a landscape design firm in Talent\, Robin specializes in transforming urban landscapes from lawn into sustainable ecosystems that benefit both people and wildlife. Robin earned her BFA at the University of Colorado\, Boulder and considers garden design one of the fine arts with living plants for paint and the garden as her canvas. \nThe class is suitable for both home gardeners and educators.

Imagine building a house where milkweed becomes a fairy bed\, a seashell becomes a bathtub\, and stones make a front walk. DESCRIPTION:Birds have a unique ability to inspire and delight us. They connect us with nature\, with the passage of seasons\, and with each other. Bird-watching has become the most popular outdoor activity in the US with an estimated 50 to 80 million participants.  There’s a wonderful world just waiting to be explored\, so get into birds!\nOn Sunday\, April 2nd at 9 am join Northwest Nature Shop of Ashland as we visit Ashland Pond\, an Ashland birding hotspot.  Waterfowl\, raptors\, and possible river otter and beaver sightings will round out the morning. Expect about 2 miles of walking on gentle paths.  Please bring binoculars if you have them and look forward to an enjoyable excursion into the wonderful world of birds!\n Bird walk participants will meet at 9:00 am at the Northwest Nature Shop\, 154 Oak St.  Ashland. The Northwest Nature Shop will offer a build your own birdhouse class on Saturday April 1st at 11 am.   Lee Web\, local wildlife biologist\, will lead the class in building a birdhouse and have some fun facts about birds. This is a family-friendly project that includes hammering\, and drilling. SUMMARY:Nature Journals 101: Explore the natural world of Lithia Park and create a nature journal of your observations
DESCRIPTION:Create your first nature journal! Many important scientists\, naturalists\, and philosophers such as Charles Darwin\, Henry David Thoreau\, Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Aldo Leopold\, Rachel Carson\, and John Muir were all known for keeping journals of their observations\, poems\, and discoveries. On Sunday March 5th\, at 2 pm we’ll meet at the Northwest Nature Shop and then walk over to Lithia Park to observe the natural world around us and then record what we hear\, smell\, see\, and feel. Nature journaling  teaches children to become keen observers of the natural world by drawing and writing about plants and animals in the field.Keeping a nature journal develops the most important science process skills; observation and documentation.
