The guide and the talk will prepare folks to hunt and serve wild mushrooms\, as well will delight with stories\, history\, possibilities\, recipes\, and more. \nFry\, Thrive or Die is a pocket-sized field guide to the most prominent and distinctive wild mushrooms in the Western United States. Each species is identified with a detailed color picture\, distinct features\, as well on habitat\, fruiting timing\, edibility\, creative uses\, and dangerous look-alikes. The talk will highlight some must-know species in our area. Many of the current guides are decades old and in crucial need of update on edibility\, medicinal benefits\, toxicities\, and other uses. \nMushrooms attract a distinct audience. There are wild mushrooms that make a splendid meal\, can alter your mind\, improve your health\, potentially save your life\, or end your life. The talk is suitable for both beginning foragers as well as experienced mushroom maniacs who seek new information on mushroom medicines\, hallucinogens\, toxins\, innovative applications\, and edibility. Happy hunting and fry\, fly and thrive! \nAbout the Author:\nDr. Michael Amaranthus \nDr Mike Amaranthus is a world-renowned mycologist and scientist\, who even has several mushroom and truffles named after him and is the recipient of the USDA Highest Award for Scientific Achievement. Dr Mike and his wife Eileen founded Mycorrhizal Applications Inc. the world’s largest producer of mycorrhizal fungal products.  Dr Mike believes “fungi” should emphasize “fun”. As a two- time cancer survivor\, getting to know this fantastic group of mushrooms has enriched and perhaps saved his life. He believes that a mushroom presentation cannot only be accurate and have substance but be entertaining as well.

SUMMARY:Social Forestry Presentation by Tomi Hazel Wednesday April 23rd 7 pm
DESCRIPTION:Social Forestry is the cultural way of being engaged with our uplands and margins. Most of modern forestry has been extractive and industrial. We can learn from the landscape what works in the long run while supporting sustainable lifestyles and vernacular art and celebration. Come along for the vision and stories\, stay for the skills and practices. We can become People of Place if we pay attention and close our loops.\nTomi Hazel Vaarde is the pen name of Tom Ward\, a long time citizen of Ashland. Hazel is the cultural name now used in Social Forestry work. \nArriving in Ashland in the early 70’s Tomi Hazel kept busy in social organizing\, as President and Board Member of several startup non-profits\, including the Ashland Community Food Store\, Ashland Community Health Clinic\, Hokola commune in the Colestine\, and The Last Resort on the Greensprings. Hazel is a founder and member of South Mountain Friends Meetings. In the early 80’s Hazel was instrumental in the Pacific Northwest organizing of Tilth\, Provender\, and Permaculture. Two years as an instructor and administrator at D-Q University in Davis led to many years of teaching the Permaculture Design Course and advanced courses at several institutes in California\, PNW\, South Africa\, Arizona\, Taiwan and Ashland. \nIn the 1990’s Hazel stewarded “Tom’s Garden Cottage” on upper Bush Street and carried apprentices and tours\, eldered the Wilderness Charter School at Ashland High\, advised and worked for The Rogue Institute of Economy and Ecology. Hazel sat on the Ashland Forestry Commission and advised and worked with Lomakatsii and the Ashland Ranger District. Many organic farms and permaculture homesteads have had the benefit of Hazel’s counsel. \nFor the last quarter century Hazel has been stewarding a land tending field station and forestry camp at Wolf Gulch Ranch in the Little Applegate canyon.

Edible and poisonous varieties will be discussed. Meet at the Northwest Nature Shop\, 154 Oak St.\, Ashland at 10:00 am on Saturday\, November 9th where we’ll gather as a group and then drive to the foraging location (approximately 45 – 60 minutes from Ashland.) SUMMARY:New Hikes in Oregon A slide show presentation by  William L. Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Author and hiking guru William L. Sullivan takes us on a slide show tour of new and\nchanged trails he discovered while updating his “100 Hikes”; guidebooks for Oregon at Northwest Nature Shop on Wednesday June 5th at 7 pm.\nWe’ll visit a new “Painted Hills” preserve in Central Oregon\, a boardwalk through the\nRedwood’s Grove of Titans\, and a railroad trail in Scappoose. Sullivan will also talk\nabout what’s changed because of recent wildfires\, tell how to get permits for trails\nwith limited access\, and describe terrific but overlooked trails close to home that\nweren’t affected by fires or permits. As always\, Sullivan spices his talk with\nanecdotes about history\, wildflowers\, and geology along the way.\nSullivan is the author of 22 books about history\, mystery\, and adventure. Among his\nlatest are “Exploring Oregon’s History” and “The Ship in the Woods\,” a historical\nnovel about the Swedish Vikings in Russia. His journal of a 1000-mile hike across\nOregon\, "Listening for Coyote\," was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage\nCommission as one of Oregon's 100 most significant books.\nThere is no charge. Seating is limited. Arrive early to secure a seat.

SUMMARY:CLOUDS: free workshop on clouds\, how to identify and paint them. By artist Sarah F. Burns
DESCRIPTION:Time for art and science fun. On Tuesday May 14th at 7 pm at Northwest Nature Shop\, local landscape artist Sarah F Burns will offer a free workshop on identifying the main type of clouds and practical strategies for drawing and painting them. \nLearn the 10 main cloud types (along with some cool bonus clouds). See how artists have depicted clouds in paintings and learn which clouds will rain on you and which probably won’t. \nThis one-hour slide talk is designed for artists\, but is really for anyone who loves to watch the sky. \nThis workshop is free but pre-registration is required. Call Northwest Nature Shop 541-482-3241 or email northwestnatureshop@gmail.com to sign up. \nNorthwest Nature Shop\nTuesday\, May 14 at 7pm\nThis workshop is for artists and non-artists who appreciate clouds and want to learn more about constantly changing beautiful clouds. \nFor nearly two decades\, Sarah Burns\, a Southern Oregon-based artist has been painting timeless subjects that include Figures\, Still-life\, and Landscape. Burns has exhibited in group exhibitions at the Schneider Museum of Art\, The Maryhill Museum\, The Arkell Museum\, Grants Pass Art Museum\, Coos Art Museum\, and other notable institutions. When she is not in her studio\, she teaches at Project Space and Southern Oregon University. Her work has been featured in American Art Collector\, Southern Oregon Magazine\, among other publications. In 2016\, Burns was awarded the Hudson River Fellowship by the Grand Central Atelier. \nArtist Statement: “The more I make and study art\, the more I find I am studying science. In order to understand what I see and create more convincing illusions\, I’m looking into the biology of the retina\, light\, geometry\, human muscular and skeletal anatomy\, meteorology and geology. In turn\, this scientific inquiry inspires wonder and awe for the natural world\, so\, in addition to its purpose of feeding the practical part of art making\, it ultimately feeds the mercurial\, harder-to-define emotive and spiritual part of creating art.”

SUMMARY:Introductory Fall LICHEN Hike!
DESCRIPTION:Hi there local Naturalists! \nI\, Nolan Richard\, am thrilled to lead a Lichen Hike from 10am-3pm on Saturday October 21st to Pilot Rock! \nThis hike will serve as an introductory field lichen class focusing on lichen anatomy\, biology\, ecology\, and of course…  identification. I chose Pilot Rock for the diversity of habitats (young and old conifer forest\, oak woodland\, meadow\, and rocky habitats)\, which will give us a great lichen diversity. \nThe hike itself will be slow paced\, relatively short (3-3.5 miles) with up to 450 ft of elevation gain. We will do some exploring of the PCT\, the trail to Pilot Rock\, and “Pilot” meadow (The large meadow below Pilot Rock). We will meet at the Northwest Nature Shop at 9:50am. \nPlease bring… \n\nWarm clothes and good shoes (there is a good chance of cold and rain this time of year) – I’ll update you with weather as the date approaches. We will reschedule if the weather is bad or if there’s too much fresh snow covering the ground.\nLunch and water.\nA loupe/magnifying glass for looking at small lichen features. Important!! (Available at the Nature Shop)\n(Optional). A copy of  “Macrolichens of the Pacific Northwest” by Bruce McCune if you have one. (A couple copies available at the Nature Shop).\n\nPlease RSVP by emailing nolrich829@gmail.com (Limited to 12 participants). Class costs $20/person. \n \nCheers\, Nolan \n\n\nExpect to learn… \n1.  The basics of how lichens work and what they are composed of. \n2. How to go about identifying them. (Using terminology\, categorizing) \n3. The characteristics of the common lichen genera (8+ genera) along the trails\, and a couple less common genera.

SUMMARY:October 2023 Annular Eclipse!
DESCRIPTION:  \nRing of Fire \nOn Saturday\, Oct. 14\, 2023\, there will be an annular solar eclipse almost fully visible from right here in Ashland! During an annular solar eclipse\, the apparent size of the Moon’s disk is slightly smaller than the apparent size of the Sun’s disk. Therefore\, only the outer edge of the Sun remains visible and the Sun appears as a brilliant ring if you are inside the path of annular solar eclipse. This is an otherworldly sight often called a “ring of fire”. \nThe path arches from Oregon to Texas; then it will continue south through Central America to Brazil.  If you’re on the path of annularity you’ll see the full annular eclipse and the closer you are to the center of that path\, the longer theb annularity (the maximum point of the eclipse) will last.  The whole event will take about three hours\, but annularity will only last about five minutes. The eclipse will begin in Oregon at 9:13 a.m. PDT and end in Texas at 12:03 p.m. CDT. \nBe Prepared! \nYou will need eclipse glasses to safely view the Sun. You can get them by clicking right here!  We also highly recommend that you gather up colanders\, slotted spoons\, or anything else with small holes (you can poke holes in a piece of cardboard)\, because the eclipse will make very cool shadows! \nAnd that’s not all… \nThis eclipse will be a warm-up act for the spectacle of the total solar eclipse crossing the United States just 177 days later on Monday\, April 8\, 2024.  A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth\, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.  The total solar eclipse will cross North America\, passing over Mexico\, the United States\, and Canada. Except during the brief total phase of the eclipse\, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face\, you’ll need solar glasses to safely view this one too!

SUMMARY:BIRDING HARNEY COUNTY Presentation by Harry Fuller
DESCRIPTION:A world–class birder’s paradise\, Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is located in remote and beautiful southeastern Oregon. While Malheur is the main draw in the area\, there are many birding hotspots nearby including Steens Mountain and the lush floodplain around the city of Burns.  Harry Fuller\, birding guide and author has written a book to help find new places to bird in southeastern Oregon. \nFuller will present this book on Thursday September 21st at 7 pm here at Northwest Nature Shop.  Come early to get a seat. Harry’s presentations are always entertaining and informative. Fuller’s book\, Birding Harney County\, will help you find the birds you are looking for by identifying where and when the birds are present. Harney County has many birds not found where most birders live. From Bobolink to Common Nighthawk. From Ferruginous Hawk to Franklin’s Gull. From White Pelican to Wilson’s Phalarope this area is a birder’s challenge\, and this book will bring some birder’s rewards. \nJoin Fuller as he presents where to bird at Malheur field station and the lesser known birding hotspots in Harney County.
