SUMMARY:The Conundrum of "Megafires" - talk with Dennis Odion PhD
DESCRIPTION:Join us for either/or both a fire Talk & Walk: \nOctober 24th TALK: “Megafires” are increasingly damaging to people and their assets. We constantly hear that “active management” of forests is a cannot-miss solution with highly desired fringe benefits. \nBut\, what is “active management”? Can it live up to the hype? This Talk will explore these questions. \nOctober 26th WALK: The follow up field trip to Grizzly Peak will complement the presentation by focusing on the ecological effects of crown (severe) fire in our forests. More details and RSVP here. \n\nDennis Odion\, Ph.D is an ecologist interested in vegetation pattern and process. He has studied fire behavior and effects via field experiments and geographical methods. He previously monitored fires as a vegetation manager and field technician in northern California\, gaining valuable practical experience with fire suppressed forests\, and on the subject of living with fire. \nDr. Odion has also studied the resiliency of fire-specialized species. He has lived in Ashland since 2000.

SUMMARY:The Genius of Maria Merian: free talk
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-1600s\, most people believed frogs\, mice\, and insects generated spontaneously from mud\, dung or dead animals\, and were evidence of the devil’s presence. Young Maria Sibylla Merian collected insects and recorded metamorphosis by painting insects in secret. Her very passions put her at risk of being charged\, sentenced\, and executed for being a witch. She radically broke the mores of her day and changed science in her lifetime. A hundred years later\, her paintings and methods influenced other naturalists including the young ornithologist Audubon. \nSpeaker Jari Thymian is a full-time traveling RVer. Along with her husband Greg\, she volunteers for extended periods in state and national parks\, historic sites\, wildlife refuges and hatcheries as interpretive tour guide and jack-of-all trades. They’re in their sixth year of adventure and have volunteered at nine sites in six states. Jari caught and preserved her first insects starting in Minnesota 4-H in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Birding Without Borders: An Epic World Big Year
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nIn 2015\, bird nerd Noah Strycker of Oregon became the first human to see more than half of the planet’s bird species in a single\, year-long\, round-the-world birding trip. Anything could have happened\, and a lot did. He was scourged by blood-sucking leeches\, suffered fevers and sleep deprivation\, survived airline snafus and car breakdowns and mudslides and torrential floods\, skirted war zones\, and had the time of his life. Birding on seven continents and carrying only a pack on his back\, Strycker enlisted the enthusiastic support of local birders to tick more than 6\,000 species\, including Adelie Penguins in Antarctica\, a Harpy Eagle in Brazil\, a Spoon-billed Sandpiper in Thailand\, and a Green-breasted Pitta in Uganda. He shared the adventure in real time on his daily blog (audubon.org/noah)\, and now he reveals the inside story. This humorous and inspiring presentation about Strycker’s epic World Big Year will leave you with a new appreciation for the birds and birders of the world.
