SUMMARY:Morels and other Spring Mushrooms in Southern Oregon by "Fry\, Thrive\, or Die" Author Michael Amaranthus
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday May 14th\, from 7-8pm\, Northwest Nature Shop in Ashland will be hosting world renowned Mycologist and Scientist Michael Amaranthus who will discuss morels and other delicious and medicinal spring fruiting mushrooms in Southern Oregon. \nDr. Mike recently published “Fry\, Thrive or Die”\, a fun pocket guide to western US mushrooms.  Edible? Medicinal? Hallucinogenic?  Poisonous? Dr Mike will share what you need to know about mushrooms and their uses. \nIn his presentation\, Dr. Mike will highlight local mushroom species that grow in our area. The guide and the talk will prepare folks to hunt and serve wild mushrooms\, as well will delight with stories\, history\, possibilities\, recipes\, and more. \nFry\, Thrive or Die is a pocket-sized field guide to the most prominent and distinctive wild mushrooms in the Western United States. Each species is identified with a detailed color picture\, distinct features\, as well on habitat\, fruiting timing\, edibility\, creative uses\, and dangerous look-alikes. The talk will highlight some must-know species in our area. Many of the current guides are decades old and in crucial need of update on edibility\, medicinal benefits\, toxicities\, and other uses. \nMushrooms attract a distinct audience. There are wild mushrooms that make a splendid meal\, can alter your mind\, improve your health\, potentially save your life\, or end your life. The talk is suitable for both beginning foragers as well as experienced mushroom maniacs who seek new information on mushroom medicines\, hallucinogens\, toxins\, innovative applications\, and edibility. Happy hunting and fry\, fly and thrive! \nAbout the Author:\nDr. Michael Amaranthus \nDr Mike Amaranthus is a world-renowned mycologist and scientist\, who even has several mushroom and truffles named after him and is the recipient of the USDA Highest Award for Scientific Achievement. Dr Mike and his wife Eileen founded Mycorrhizal Applications Inc. the world’s largest producer of mycorrhizal fungal products.  Dr Mike believes “fungi” should emphasize “fun”. As a two- time cancer survivor\, getting to know this fantastic group of mushrooms has enriched and perhaps saved his life. He believes that a mushroom presentation cannot only be accurate and have substance but be entertaining as well.

SUMMARY:Social Forestry Presentation by Tomi Hazel Wednesday April 23rd 7 pm
DESCRIPTION:Social Forestry is the cultural way of being engaged with our uplands and margins. Most of modern forestry has been extractive and industrial. We can learn from the landscape what works in the long run while supporting sustainable lifestyles and vernacular art and celebration. Come along for the vision and stories\, stay for the skills and practices. We can become People of Place if we pay attention and close our loops.\nTomi Hazel Vaarde is the pen name of Tom Ward\, a long time citizen of Ashland. Hazel is the cultural name now used in Social Forestry work. \nArriving in Ashland in the early 70’s Tomi Hazel kept busy in social organizing\, as President and Board Member of several startup non-profits\, including the Ashland Community Food Store\, Ashland Community Health Clinic\, Hokola commune in the Colestine\, and The Last Resort on the Greensprings. Hazel is a founder and member of South Mountain Friends Meetings. In the early 80’s Hazel was instrumental in the Pacific Northwest organizing of Tilth\, Provender\, and Permaculture. Two years as an instructor and administrator at D-Q University in Davis led to many years of teaching the Permaculture Design Course and advanced courses at several institutes in California\, PNW\, South Africa\, Arizona\, Taiwan and Ashland. \nIn the 1990’s Hazel stewarded “Tom’s Garden Cottage” on upper Bush Street and carried apprentices and tours\, eldered the Wilderness Charter School at Ashland High\, advised and worked for The Rogue Institute of Economy and Ecology. Hazel sat on the Ashland Forestry Commission and advised and worked with Lomakatsii and the Ashland Ranger District. Many organic farms and permaculture homesteads have had the benefit of Hazel’s counsel. \nFor the last quarter century Hazel has been stewarding a land tending field station and forestry camp at Wolf Gulch Ranch in the Little Applegate canyon.

As always\, Sullivan spices his talk with\nanecdotes about history\, wildflowers\, and geology along the way.\nSullivan is the author of 22 books about history\, mystery\, and adventure. Among his\nlatest are “Exploring Oregon’s History” and “The Ship in the Woods\,” a historical\nnovel about the Swedish Vikings in Russia. His journal of a 1000-mile hike across\nOregon\, "Listening for Coyote\," was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage\nCommission as one of Oregon's 100 most significant books.\nThere is no charge. SUMMARY:CLOUDS: free workshop on clouds\, how to identify and paint them. By artist Sarah F. Burns
DESCRIPTION:Time for art and science fun. On Tuesday May 14th at 7 pm at Northwest Nature Shop\, local landscape artist Sarah F Burns will offer a free workshop on identifying the main type of clouds and practical strategies for drawing and painting them. \nLearn the 10 main cloud types (along with some cool bonus clouds). See how artists have depicted clouds in paintings and learn which clouds will rain on you and which probably won’t. \nThis one-hour slide talk is designed for artists\, but is really for anyone who loves to watch the sky. \nThis workshop is free but pre-registration is required. Call Northwest Nature Shop 541-482-3241 or email northwestnatureshop@gmail.com to sign up. \nNorthwest Nature Shop\nTuesday\, May 14 at 7pm\nThis workshop is for artists and non-artists who appreciate clouds and want to learn more about constantly changing beautiful clouds. \nFor nearly two decades\, Sarah Burns\, a Southern Oregon-based artist has been painting timeless subjects that include Figures\, Still-life\, and Landscape. Burns has exhibited in group exhibitions at the Schneider Museum of Art\, The Maryhill Museum\, The Arkell Museum\, Grants Pass Art Museum\, Coos Art Museum\, and other notable institutions. When she is not in her studio\, she teaches at Project Space and Southern Oregon University. Her work has been featured in American Art Collector\, Southern Oregon Magazine\, among other publications. In 2016\, Burns was awarded the Hudson River Fellowship by the Grand Central Atelier. \nArtist Statement: “The more I make and study art\, the more I find I am studying science. In order to understand what I see and create more convincing illusions\, I’m looking into the biology of the retina\, light\, geometry\, human muscular and skeletal anatomy\, meteorology and geology. In turn\, this scientific inquiry inspires wonder and awe for the natural world\, so\, in addition to its purpose of feeding the practical part of art making\, it ultimately feeds the mercurial\, harder-to-define emotive and spiritual part of creating art.”

SUMMARY:An Evening with Richard Crossley
DESCRIPTION:Richard Crossley’s field guides have been Northwest Nature Shop favorites for years.  Richard Crossley is an internationally acclaimed birder\, photographer and award-winning author of ‘The Crossley ID Guide’ series. Born in Yorkshire\, he also lived in Japan\, and birded worldwide before settling down in the USA. \nRichard will talk about birding lessons learned from living on 3 continents to paying back through conservation initiatives and youth birding. It will be a fast-paced story told in a Yorkshire brogue\, through a camera lens that loves color and art\, but with a strong point of view.\nCrazy\, wildly passionate\, driven and single-minded are just a few of the words used to describe his love of birding and the outdoors. He quickly became obsessed with the newfound opportunities provided by digital technology\, Photoshop and book design. The Crossley ID Guide series was created. The innovative design shows a more lifelike and complete picture\, challenging many of the traditional ‘old-school’ book layouts. With humor and depth Richard will highlight the thoughts behind the revolutionary ‘The Crossley ID Guide’ series to self-publishing his latest guide on Western Birds – some of it will surprise you! \n Come and listen to Richard’s optimistic outlook for birding\, lifestyles and conservation. It’s sure to change the way you think! \nFree admission\, no assigned seating. 7 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm. \nThis presentation is at Bellview Grange\, 1050 Tolman Creek Rd\, Ashland\, OR 97520

SUMMARY:Finding Butterflies and Other Wildness
DESCRIPTION:Sure to be a visual and intellectual delight! Local author David Lee Myers’ new book “Wings in the Light: Wild Butterflies in North America\,” encourages us to engage nature in our own yards\, countrysides\, and wildish public lands. Photographs feature butterflies and habitats across North America\, emphasizing those near his home territory. \nMyers will show slides from his book\, especially butterflies of the Rogue-Siskiyou area and the majestic Monarchs. He’ll read from “Wings in the Light” about going out and looking around—how and where to find butterflies and other wildness—and on the rewards for doing so. \nDavid Lee Myers was raised by a scientist father and artist mother. Settling in the Pacific Northwest\, he combined his heritages into natural history photography. Teaching college\, helping students find their own voices expressing the joys\, challenges\, and sorrows of life was a great satisfaction.

SUMMARY:New Hikes of Central and Southern Oregon\, with William Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Author\, historian\, backcountry adventurer William Sullivan has just done a complete update the hiking guide book for Central Oregon – huge changes because of fires and an upcoming permit system. He is also doing new printing of “100 Hikes in Southern Oregon” next month that includes the Jack-Ash Trail and updated information related to recent fire effects. Come hear from Oregon’s history and hiking guru on his yearly visit to the Northwest Nature Shop! \nThe author of three novels and a dozen nonfiction books\, Sullivan grew up in Salem\, Oregon. He completed his B.A. degree in English at Cornell University under Alison Lurie\, studied linguistics at Germany’s Heidelberg University\, and earned an M.A. in German at the University of Oregon. He reads in a dozen languages\, plays the pipe organ\, and enjoys backcountry ski expeditions. \nSullivan is known in the American West as the author who backpacked more than a thousand miles across Oregon’s wilderness in 1985. His journal of that adventure\, “Listening for Coyote\,” has since been chosen one of Oregon’s “100 Books\,” the most significant books in state history.\nIn summer he writes at the log cabin that he and his wife Janell Sorensen built by hand in the wilds of Oregon’s Coast Range\, more than a mile from roads\, electricity\, and telephones. The rest of the year they live in Eugene\, Oregon\, where he volunteers to promote libraries and literature.

SUMMARY:The Conundrum of "Megafires" - talk with Dennis Odion PhD
DESCRIPTION:Join us for either/or both a fire Talk & Walk: \nOctober 24th TALK: “Megafires” are increasingly damaging to people and their assets. We constantly hear that “active management” of forests is a cannot-miss solution with highly desired fringe benefits. \nBut\, what is “active management”? Can it live up to the hype? This Talk will explore these questions. \nOctober 26th WALK: The follow up field trip to Grizzly Peak will complement the presentation by focusing on the ecological effects of crown (severe) fire in our forests. More details and RSVP here. \n\nDennis Odion\, Ph.D is an ecologist interested in vegetation pattern and process. He has studied fire behavior and effects via field experiments and geographical methods. He previously monitored fires as a vegetation manager and field technician in northern California\, gaining valuable practical experience with fire suppressed forests\, and on the subject of living with fire. \nDr. Odion has also studied the resiliency of fire-specialized species. He has lived in Ashland since 2000.

SUMMARY:The Genius of Maria Merian: free talk
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-1600s\, most people believed frogs\, mice\, and insects generated spontaneously from mud\, dung or dead animals\, and were evidence of the devil’s presence. Young Maria Sibylla Merian collected insects and recorded metamorphosis by painting insects in secret. Her very passions put her at risk of being charged\, sentenced\, and executed for being a witch. She radically broke the mores of her day and changed science in her lifetime. A hundred years later\, her paintings and methods influenced other naturalists including the young ornithologist Audubon. \nSpeaker Jari Thymian is a full-time traveling RVer. Along with her husband Greg\, she volunteers for extended periods in state and national parks\, historic sites\, wildlife refuges and hatcheries as interpretive tour guide and jack-of-all trades. They’re in their sixth year of adventure and have volunteered at nine sites in six states. Jari caught and preserved her first insects starting in Minnesota 4-H in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Birding Without Borders: An Epic World Big Year
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nIn 2015\, bird nerd Noah Strycker of Oregon became the first human to see more than half of the planet’s bird species in a single\, year-long\, round-the-world birding trip. Anything could have happened\, and a lot did. He was scourged by blood-sucking leeches\, suffered fevers and sleep deprivation\, survived airline snafus and car breakdowns and mudslides and torrential floods\, skirted war zones\, and had the time of his life. Birding on seven continents and carrying only a pack on his back\, Strycker enlisted the enthusiastic support of local birders to tick more than 6\,000 species\, including Adelie Penguins in Antarctica\, a Harpy Eagle in Brazil\, a Spoon-billed Sandpiper in Thailand\, and a Green-breasted Pitta in Uganda. He shared the adventure in real time on his daily blog (audubon.org/noah)\, and now he reveals the inside story. This humorous and inspiring presentation about Strycker’s epic World Big Year will leave you with a new appreciation for the birds and birders of the world.
