SUMMARY:Morels and other Spring Mushrooms in Southern Oregon by "Fry\, Thrive\, or Die" Author Michael Amaranthus
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday May 14th\, from 7-8pm\, Northwest Nature Shop in Ashland will be hosting world renowned Mycologist and Scientist Michael Amaranthus who will discuss morels and other delicious and medicinal spring fruiting mushrooms in Southern Oregon. \nDr. Mike recently published “Fry\, Thrive or Die”\, a fun pocket guide to western US mushrooms.  Edible? Medicinal? Hallucinogenic?  Poisonous? Dr Mike will share what you need to know about mushrooms and their uses. \nIn his presentation\, Dr. Mike will highlight local mushroom species that grow in our area. The guide and the talk will prepare folks to hunt and serve wild mushrooms\, as well will delight with stories\, history\, possibilities\, recipes\, and more. \nFry\, Thrive or Die is a pocket-sized field guide to the most prominent and distinctive wild mushrooms in the Western United States. Each species is identified with a detailed color picture\, distinct features\, as well on habitat\, fruiting timing\, edibility\, creative uses\, and dangerous look-alikes. The talk will highlight some must-know species in our area. Many of the current guides are decades old and in crucial need of update on edibility\, medicinal benefits\, toxicities\, and other uses. \nMushrooms attract a distinct audience. There are wild mushrooms that make a splendid meal\, can alter your mind\, improve your health\, potentially save your life\, or end your life. The talk is suitable for both beginning foragers as well as experienced mushroom maniacs who seek new information on mushroom medicines\, hallucinogens\, toxins\, innovative applications\, and edibility. Happy hunting and fry\, fly and thrive! \nAbout the Author:\nDr. Michael Amaranthus \nDr Mike Amaranthus is a world-renowned mycologist and scientist\, who even has several mushroom and truffles named after him and is the recipient of the USDA Highest Award for Scientific Achievement. Dr Mike and his wife Eileen founded Mycorrhizal Applications Inc. the world’s largest producer of mycorrhizal fungal products.  Dr Mike believes “fungi” should emphasize “fun”. As a two- time cancer survivor\, getting to know this fantastic group of mushrooms has enriched and perhaps saved his life. He believes that a mushroom presentation cannot only be accurate and have substance but be entertaining as well.

SUMMARY:Guided Mushroom Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join our local mushroom expert Mike Potts for a slow-paced\, off-trail walk through the woods and learn your way around the world of wild fungi. The emphasis will be on finding fungi and learning about identification and the diversity of mushroom species and how to sustainably harvest wild mushrooms. Edible and poisonous varieties will be discussed. Meet at the Northwest Nature Shop\, 154 Oak St.\, Ashland at 10:00 am on Saturday\, November 9th where we’ll gather as a group and then drive to the foraging location (approximately 45 – 60 minutes from Ashland.) Return to Ashland by 4:00 pm. \nBe prepared for adverse weather. Wear appropriate hiking shoes (We will be doing some off-trail walking on uneven terrain)\, bring a water bottle\, a lunch\, rain gear\, a collecting basket\, a foldable knife\, a mushroom ID book if you have one\, and a whistle. Cost is $55 per person per hike. The location of each hike will be disclosed at a later date to give us flexibility in planning around weather and mushroom abundance. Space is limited so sign up early. Payment at the time of registration is required. Call 541-482-3241 to sign up or email northwestnatureshop@gmail.com \nHOW TO PREPARE: \nDress appropriately for the weather. The key to having an enjoyable experience is to be prepared for the possibly cold and wet weather. We will be in the forests of the southern Oregon Cascade range @ 4500 ft so expect considerably colder temps at that elevation. We won’t be moving that fast so you might get colder than you do on normal hikes! We recommend dressing in layers and bringing waterproof outer layers. We will walk rain or shine.\nWear sturdy shoes. It is important to wear appropriate shoes/boots for being in the forest. Expect uneven terrain through the forest and be prepared to traverse through undergrowth\, over fallen branches\, and logs at times.\nThere are no bathrooms or outhouses at trail heads we leave from. Please plan accordingly.\nBring a lunch\, water\, knife\, safety whistle\, basket or bag for collecting and a positive attitude and open mind to learn about the world of fungi around you.\nPlease\, No Dogs. We love them but for mushroom walks\, we have to ask you to leave them home.
