You can experience the redwoods in just a few minutes… or take all week.No matter your comfort level and experience\, there are walking and hiking options for you in the redwoods. Join us for a free talk by hiking book author John Soares as he describes the best trails through the majestic redwoods  from his new book Hike the Parks: Redwood National & State Parks. \nThe new book covers the 38 best hikes in the redwoods and along the coast in Redwood National and State Parks. It also covers campgrounds\, scenic drives\, and how and where to explore tide pools and watch whales. John Soares presents his new book Day Hiking: Mount Shasta\, Lassen and Trinity Alps Regions and takes us on a tour of some of Northern California’s most fabulous day hikes.  This book “covers the best trails in the upper half of beautiful Northern California\, my home turf\, the area where I’ve lived most of my life.  Not only have I hiked all of these trails\, I’ve hiked many of them a dozen times or more.“ \nJOHN SOARES is an outdoors book author and freelance writer who has lived nearly his entire life in Northern California. He began walking the hills near his Redding birthplace at the age of 5\, later expanding his scope to day hike and backpack trails throughout the North State\, including the Trinity Alps\, the Mount Shasta area\, Lassen Volcanic National Park\, the Sierra Nevada\, and the redwood coast. \nHe is the author of 100 Classic Hikes: Northern California\, fourth edition (The Mountaineers Books\, 2018) and Day Hiking: Mount Shasta\, Lassen & Trinity Alps Regions (The Mountaineers Books\, 2018)\, and he has written over 100 newspaper and magazine articles about outdoors travel. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Northwest Nature Shop as Rogue Valley author Beckie Elgin\, launches her book “Journey the Amazing Story of OR-7\, the Oregon Wolf that Made History.” This thoughtful\, creative\, and well researched book is written for middle school aged readers\, with wide appeal to adults – a must read for anyone that loves wolves! Beckie will read a passage from the book and be available for signing. \nSpace is limited! Please RSVP to jeanine@kswild.org \n“Most of you know the story of this famous wolf. Journey left his homeland in northeast Oregon in the fall of 2011. He traveled south\, becoming the first wild wolf in western Oregon for over sixty years. Journey then headed into California where he made headline news as the first Canis lupus to enter the Golden State for nearly a century. By now a household name\, Journey returned to southern Oregon where he met up with a black female wolf. Since then they’ve produced three litters of pups. \nI felt compelled to write about this tenacious and important canine. He inspired me\, as he did so many others. I decided to create a book for a middle-grade audience\, but one that would also appeal to readers of all ages. This allowed me some freedom in the writing style and also enabled me to write a book that would be educational for young people. This summer I found a terrific publisher\, Inkwater Press in Portland. The people at Inkwater are dedicated to the environment and are especially fond of wolves. They took Journey under their wings and did a beautiful job editing and designing the book. They will continue to help the cause by promoting the book and organizing readings and other events.”
