SUMMARY:Guided Fall Mushroom Walk #4
DESCRIPTION:Join our local mushroom expert Mike Potts for a slow-paced\, off-trail walk through the woods and learn your way around the world of wild fungi. Edible and poisonous varieties will be discussed. Meet at the Northwest Nature Shop\, 154 Oak St.\, Ashland at 10:00 am where we’ll gather as a group and then drive to the foraging location (approximately 45 – 60 minutes from Ashland.) Return to Ashland by 4:00 pm. \nBe prepared for adverse weather. Wear appropriate hiking shoes (We will be doing some off-trail walking on uneven terrain)\, bring a water bottle\, a lunch\, rain gear\, a collecting basket\, a foldable knife\, a mushroom ID book if you have one\, and a whistle. Cost is $55 per person per hike.  6 dates offered:  Saturday September 24\, Sunday September 25\, October 2nd\, October 15\, October 16 and October 22nd.   The location of each hike will be disclosed at a later date to give us flexibility in planning around weather and mushroom abundance. Call 541-482-3241 to sign up or email northwestnatureshop@gmail.com \n  \nHOW TO PREPARE: \n\nDress appropriately for the weather. The key to having an enjoyable experience is to be prepared for the possibly cold and wet weather.  We will be in the forests of the southern Oregon Cascade range @ 4500 ft so expect considerably colder temps at that elevation.  We won’t be moving that fast so you might get colder than you do on normal hikes! We recommend dressing in layers and bringing waterproof outer layers. We will walk rain or shine.\n\n\nWear sturdy shoes. It is important to wear appropriate shoes/boots for being in the forest. Expect uneven terrain through the forest and be prepared to traverse through undergrowth\, over fallen branches\, and logs at times.\nThere are no bathrooms or outhouses at trail heads we leave from. SUMMARY:Nature Journals 101: Explore the natural world of Lithia Park and create a nature journal of your observations
DESCRIPTION:Create your first nature journal! Many important scientists\, naturalists\, and philosophers such as Charles Darwin\, Henry David Thoreau\, Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Aldo Leopold\, Rachel Carson\, and John Muir were all known for keeping journals of their observations\, poems\, and discoveries. On Sunday June 4th\, at 2 pm we’ll meet at the Northwest Nature Shop and then walk over to Lithia Park to observe the natural world around us and then record what we hear\, smell\, see\, and feel. Nature journaling teaches children to become keen observers of the natural world by drawing and writing about plants and animals in the field.  Keeping a nature journal develops the most important science process skills; observation and documentation. Christy Chow will lead this class for children 5 and older. $5 per child/parent participant.  Pre-register at the NW Nature Shop 541-482-3241.
